Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

What's in a name?

You may have been wondering why I've been calling my new friend by two different names. As it turns out, I would have to rename Dylan. His foster family had named him this, and Glenn said that Dylan knew his name. I would not have changed this under normal circumstances, however, at the time my family was waiting on the impending arrival of my newest nephew who's name was already, you guessed it, Dylan. For the record, Dylan Micah was born on Wednesday, January 31st, two days before the arrival of my "baby." (And yes, he was as adorable as babies come!) The name Duncan came to my mind almost immediately upon trying to think of something similar to Dylan. It starts with a "D" and ends with the same "an" sound. So I was hopeful that it would minimize the adjustment he would have to make in knowing his own name. This seems to have worked out very well. I made sure to refer to him as Duncan right from the start and not call him Dylan at all (although some confusion has occasionally taken place since there is still another Dylan in the family now. "Dylan!....er... I mean...Duncan!") But he seems to react to being called Duncan and I have experienced no issues. He has however, obtained an unfortunately corny nick name in the process. I will occasionally cry out, "Duncan Heines!" when calling him. 'Cause he's just so sweet. Yes I know, very corny. But he is very sweet.

I'm jumping ahead of myself though, and I haven't even told you about his homecoming. In any case, to alleviate any further confusion on the subject, I will refer to my Sheltie as Duncan from now on.
