Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Hold that door!

We've had a ruff couple of days. Duncan is still sliding backwards on coming in from the back yard. Last night I got home at about 6:30 and let him out. I didn't get him back into the house until about 10:30. He barks when I open the door and call him, and paces around the shed, going from one side to the other to peak at me around the corner. He would not come in. I even tried propping the door open and standing back to let him come in. He came to the door and sniffed and walked away. And I also tried propping the door open and going out into the yard and pointing for him to go into the house. That eventually worked at about 10:30, but it took awhile too. I must be doing something to make him more nervous. It took me so long to get him in the house this morning that I was running late for work. I had an 8:30 conference call that I wasn't going to make and had to just dial in from home. My poor Duncan. I was hoping to improve his ability to come in the house by himself, not make it worse. He likes his treats and biscuits and food, but he's not really treat driven. Or at least, any treat drive that he does have is overridden by his fears. They don't entice him to come inside when he's nervous. And praise doesn't really seem to do anything for him either. And really exhuberant praise makes him even more nervous. I'm picking up the books that I have on hold at the library tonight. Maybe getting another visit from Hannah this weekend would be good for him too.
