Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Boom!

We had a thunderstorm come through last night, and no surprise, Duncan was afraid of it. I was just getting ready to climb into bed when the first thunder clap went off. The power immediately went out and did not come back on. And before I knew it, Duncan, who had been laying in bed, was standing next to me, trembling and panting. I lit a candle and crawled into bed. Duncan's fear of the storm was stronger than his fear of me and he nearly plastered himself to my side. He let me put my arms around him and pet him and kiss him, something he normally would not allow me to do. I got him calmed down enough to lay down and I blew the candle out. We laid there for quite awhile, the bed shaking with his trembling.

Later, another loud thunder clap woke me to find Duncan at my side trembling and panting again. My pendulum clock in the living room chimed 5:00 am. The bedside lamp was on and my digital alarm clock's red LED display was flashing. I wondered when the power had come back on. I got up to use the rest-room, and when I came back, Duncan had stolen my warm spot in the bed. I crawled in next to him and pulled the covers back up. He let me hold and comfort him again for awhile and then he laid down between my pillow and the headboard, keeping very close to me.

On a side note, Gracie does not like thunderstorms either but she usually makes a bee line for the safety that is afforded by hunkering under the bed instead of my arms.

Both of them were fine and well this morning, and Duncan was later surprised by a welcomed Saturday visit from Hannah.
