Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Puppy Mill Capital, USA?

Check out this story that Nightline did on Puppy Mill's last night. They touched on some of the worse mills that are out there and that is the kind of mill that Duncan Hines and Little Debbie lived in; Duncan for 8 years and Debbie for 3. Debbie lived on chicken wire and her paws were very sensitive for a long time after I got her. She also had never gotten the exercise she needed and her muscles were very weak for awhile too. She could not jump up into my small car (less than a foot off the ground) for at least a month after she came home.

Puppy Mill Capital, USA?

To be honest however, I was dissapointed with this story. Nightline just barely touched on the poor care and conditions in many of the mills across America. They spent more time with a breeder who seemed to give at least decent care to his dogs. They barely scratched the surface on the more serious problems with mills. I'm afraid that many of the people who viewed this story will have been left with the impression that "Puppy Mills aren't that bad. They have clean kennels, clean food and water, exercise..." when in more instances the situation is much much worse.

I have left feedback for ABC on their site saying as much, and invite you to do the same. I'd like to see them do more, dig deeper. You can leave feedback here: http://abcnews.go.com/Site/page?id=3052660. Maybe if they get enough feedback to this effect, they'll do another, better story.

My boyfriend and I recently adopted a rescue sheltie who'd been found as a stray, and I think he's finally starting to relax . . . glad to hear that there are so many groups promoting sheltie rescue :-) I look forward to reading your blog!
