Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Monks and Dogs

I have been ridiculously busy this week and have not been giving any updates!

Last Saturday Duncan and I went over to English Landing. For those not in the Kansas City area, this is a park that is situated along the Missouri River. The river runs along one side, and train tracks run along the other, and there is a walking path up and down the bank of the river. It is a very nice park with plenty of mature trees, a playground and some soccer fields. So Duncan and I went down and walked there. He was a little nervous of the joggers and especially anyone on a bike. But I think that's understandable. He did wonderfully. Two trains went by while we were there. The first was when we were on a part of the path that is closest to the tracks. It was very loud, so Duncan and I stopped and watched it go past. When the second one came through, we were a little further away from the tracks, and we just continued walking. He really seemed to enjoy the setting. I think we'll go again Saturday if it's nice.

On another note, I just finished reading the book I referenced earlier: "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend" by the Monks of New Skete. This book is really excellent training manual. There is so much good information in it to help you understand your dog. And even the sections that doesn't necessarily apply to your particular situation (ie sections on puppies for me) even reading those sections still gave me insights to understanding Duncan. The only section that I skipped over was Reading a Pedigree. I really recommend this book to any dog owner, even if you've owned dogs for years. The copy I have was borrowed from the library, and I plan to purchase my own copy for permanent use!

I found your blog through the lldogrescue website. I adopted Tristan . . . we've just passed our 2-week mark. I'll check back to see how you and Duncan are doing.

Glenn Jones here and I have been following Duncan's progress in your blog. I thought you might like to know, we are using your blog to educate adopters who take puppy mill dogs and let them see the problems you have had and how you have dealt with them so keep on letting us know how he is doing. It is a big help to new adopters.

Shirlee,
Congratulations on Tristan! I remember seeing him on Petfinder. Do you still have the link to his Add? If you do, would email it to me? (See the Sheltie Mailbox link in the Nav section.) I'd love to go see his picture etc!

Hi, I've had a rescue Sheltie for a couple weeks now. http://ncsr-md.org/beamer1.htm He also has trust issues and is very afraid of strangers. Yesterday he suprised me and took off running when a neighbor came up to us. I needed the help of my other Sheltie to bring him home. To see what else I can do, I just took that same book off my shelf to read. It's been on the shelf for a long time. I never read it before because my other Shelties were so well behaved. I'll be reading it now though. Good luck with Duncan, he's a gorgeous dog.
