Welcome to Winning Duncan Over!
You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy
mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story
however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy
mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like
to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with
February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting
Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!
Petco Here We Come
Saturday morning Duncan and I got up and went to the Petco just down the street from us. I wanted to get him a retractable leash for our walks. I knew the Adopt-A-Pet days would be going on, and there would be more people and activity that Duncan would have to deal with. I wanted to take him to the Petco closer to me before driving out to Overland Park where the LL Dog Rescue group goes for their Adopt-A-Pet days. We'll stay closer to home to begin with. Duncan did extremely well. There were lots of people there, especially near the front door. The "Beaks and Wings" bird group was there with some really neat birds. They were a little loud at times and it made Duncan a little nervous. There were a few times that he was trembling a little bit, but we would take off and walk around to the back of the store where it was a little quieter and he seemed just fine. I think we stayed for about an hour and a half. We met some birds and some cats and some other dogs and Duncan let several people pet him! Duncan's friend Hannah is a little intimidated by larger dogs and will sometimes growl when faced with them. But at one point Saturday morning Duncan met three huge Great Danes. It was so funny! Little tiny Duncan was surrounded by these three huge dogs, you almost couldn't see him and he was just happy as could be sniffing and saying "Hi" to them all. Duncan did so well that I think I will take him down to the OP Petco for the next Adopt-A-Pet days to see Glenn and the folks at LL Dog Rescue. I believe the next one is coming up on April 7th! He will have been with me for two months by then.
Duncan also spent a good part of the day Saturday with Hannah. After we left Petco we met her and my Dad up at "Penguin Park" and walked the path there with them. We used our new retractable leash and Duncan seemed to like it very much. The walking path at this park has become one of my favorites as well. It's more "woodsy" than some of the other parks are, very pretty. We then spent the rest of the day riding around in my Mom's big SUV. Duncan jumped right up into the back-seat all by himself (well, at least up to the floor of the back seat.) We went to Home Depot and out to dinner and Hannah and Duncan hung out in the car together and waited for us. It was a busy day for us!
