Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Ups and Downs

I am often so glad that I decided to start this blog about Duncan and I's journey. It really helps me to keep things in perspective with how far he's already come. He was progressing so fast for quite awhile there that our momentum had to slow down sometime! He is still doing extremely well though. He had a little relapse into some of his timidness recently. I came home from work one day and he was trembling pretty well for no aparent reason. He's been shying away when I close the car door more lately than he had been. And then of course there's this issue of brushing that came out of the blue when we never had a serious problem with it to begin with. He has been seriously "talking back" to me and whining when I call him to come in from the back yard. It's kind of funny actually, but at the same I wonder why. Does he realy not want to come inside because he's enjoying himself? Or is he still frightened that I'm going to hurt him? But it's ok. He is still doing so much better than the day he came home for the first time!

We went for a long walk the other day with his buddy Hannah. I just loving going for walks with the two of them (or even just Duncan, but they're so fun together too.) It's one of the first reasons I decided to get a dog. I just enjoy it so. Duncan also lets me snuggle on him without getting frightened and jumping away anymore. I'm not sure how much he enjoys it yet. I can't tell if he's just putting up with it, or if he's growing to like my hugs and kisses. But he does let me kiss his sweet little head and face without pulling away. And probably one of my favorite things is seeing his little eyes looking up at me from the passenger seat of the car when I talk to him. He doesn't do the fun head cock that Hannah does when you talk to her, but the look in his eyes does seem to say something like, "I'm here with ya Mom. Glad to be here. Where we going now?"
