Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

The Expo

I meant to write about this on Monday, but it's been a horribly busy week at work! I did make it to the Kansas City Pet Expo as Planned on Saturday as I said I would in my post Kansas City Pet Expo. I had a really great time. I actually went by myself and think I enjoyed it more that way than I would have had I gone with someone. I was able to go through the expo at my own pace and do whatever I wanted without waiting for someone else or vice-versa.

Anyway I was the dog show "Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show." It was very fun. Those dogs sure to like to catch their frisbees! If I throw a frisbee for Duncan he looks at me like "Umm...what?" Then they had the dogs do the Dash and Splash running and leaping from a dock into a tank of water. Some of them launched themselves up to 17 feet before splashing into the clear blue!

I also watched the dog agility demonstrations of a local agility club. None of the dogs were as good as the ones you see on Animal Planet, but I guess if they were, they wouldn't have been there! It was a great demonstration though, and I think the best, most talented, and fastest dog I saw was a Labradoodle! He was awful cute, and very fearless as he went through the obstacles!

There were a great number of booths with different free samples of products and I think I at least walked by all of them. At one booth I got to hold a Sugar Glider. He was very tiny and cute! And at another booth I got to hold a Hedgehog! (No that's not my hairy arm. I just googled these pictures so you could see what I saw.)

There were a great deal of Rescues and Shelters there with both dogs and cats up for adoption. I met one huge Great Dane who's head came up to my chin. I am not a "big dog" person, but Danes tend to be so calm and polite that I usually like them more than I would a Lab.

I got a bumper sticker and a couple of t-shirts while I was there. The bumper sticker has a picture of a "tiger" cat on it and it says, "Single mother of 50? Spay or neuter your pet!" One of the t-shirts I got is grey with white letters that say, "Got Dog?" (Get it? Got Milk? Ha ha.) The other t-shirt is pictured here and is from No More Homeless Pets KC. The text reads: "One day you're on the bottom row, third cage from the left. The next day you're on top of the world. Adopt a Pet from a Shelter." (You can get the shirt here if you want one of your own for $10 for short sleeve or $15 for long sleeve!) I just love it.
I wore it that same afternoon when I took Duncan to the park and got to answer "Yes!" when one lady asked me if Duncan was adopted like my t-shirt said! I also gave NMHPKC my information while I was there to contact me to volunteer. I'll let you all know what I end up doing!

It was a really great event, and I am happy to report that NMHPKC has already scheduled dates to hold the event again next April! Don't miss it next year!
