Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Homecomming

Hello again all! I’m sorry; I’ve been so busy lately I’ve not had time to post. So I’m going to try to back date some entries here.

About a week after I got home from Boston I had to leave for Michigan for the weekend for my Grandmother’s memorial service. I ended up being gone for 4 days. Debbie had gotten the “Snot Nose Syndrome” while she’d been staying at Barbra’s while I was in Boston, so I decided to keep both her and Duncan home while I was in Michigan so they would not pass the upper respiratory infection on to any other dogs. I had a couple different friends of mine stop in several times a day to see them while I was gone to visit and let them outside. I was a little worried about leaving Debbie because she’d been getting sick a bit, but as it turns out I think she was only getting sick from the antibiotics she was on. I think they were just upsetting her stomach because as soon as I stopped giving them to her she stopped getting sick. Poor baby.

From what I understand the kids did very well while I was gone with near strangers coming to take care of them. No “dashing” occurred, and they did fairly well going in and out of the house for their care takers. There were fortunately no instances of them refusing to come back into the house for hours on end as Duncan had when I first got him. I was a little worried that might happen. Although Debbie did have a few accidents, everything went decidedly well.

When I got back, Debbie displayed definite excitement to see me. She dashed around the house crouching and darting away, tail wagging enthusiastically. She sat down and let me pet and snuggle her, pawing me as if she just couldn’t soak up the love fast enough. It felt very good to know that she had missed me so much. I could tell from Duncan’s body language and the look in his eyes that he had missed me as well; but as always he was not outwardly demonstrative of his emotions. Gracie of course was all over me like the crazy tiger kitty that she is, rubbing against me and administering the little love bites she always gives.

The day after I got back I spent some quality time with the dogs. I took them down to the “Three Dog Bakery” on the Plaza here in Kansas City. It’s a cute little boutique type bakery for dogs where they make canine friendly “pastries” and treats. They make a kindly fuss over the dogs, showering them with attention and treat samples. Both the dogs were typically shy, but handled the socialization exercise very well. And they of course ended up with a few tasty pastries to take home. Spoilt puppies. We also went down to English Landing Park in Parkville for a walk. It was the first time I had been down there since Debbie came home to Duncan and me. She stuck close to me as usual while Duncan enjoyed the “smell-fest,” exploring every tuff of grass along the walking path.

I never travel as much as I have had to this summer, and I am hopeful that all this travel is done for the time being! I have no trips in the foreseeable future. It’s good to be home!
