Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Little Debbie

Barbra and I have been talking about Little Debbie over the past few days. It looks like she is going to come home to Duncan and I on Friday June 8th. Here is some background information on her:

"Little Debbie was rescued by an individual who does rescue on her own. She does work with a number of rescue groups when she saves dogs. She doesn't just save Shelties. She got 8 or 9 Shelties from the mill. They all came from the same mill as Madie (a former rescue), only a different individual saved Madie. I believe some of the 8 or 9 were scheduled to go to Colorado, to a rescue group there and it fell through, so LL Dog Rescue answered the rescue plea. I think a couple of other rescue groups took a couple of them too..."

The following information was given to Barbra by the person who rescued Madie from the same Mill. It gives a good idea about what Duncan and Debbie's lives were like before they came home.

She (Madie) honestly did have a horrible life, caged all of her life with no human contact or interaction, in a kennel, dirty water in bowl, urine and feces everywhere, and hundreds of other barking dogs around her. It was a horrible sight, but I didn't feel I could leave the place without taking her as the breeder said he would have used her for breeding since she wasn't a dog that could be bought for a pet. So I said I would take her.

From what I understand the kennels were on wires, making it easier for those who ran the mill to clean up after the dogs. But this of course is very hard on the poor fur babies paws. Debbie sits kind of like a puppy, I suspect because of the soreness of her poor little feet! She was evidently pretty fear full of people when she was first rescued, but she must have overcome that very quickly because of her desire for attention because she showed me absolutely no fear when she crawled into my lap when we met. The attached picture is of her right after she was rescued. Pretty unkempt.

More updates to come. I just got a new digital camera, so I'll be able to get some better quality pictures on there than just from my camera phone!

Hi Tatha,
I am certainly no groomer, but must say I got BUSHELLS of hair out of Little Debbie. She now has a small bald spot behind each ear required to finish removing the locks of mats. We worked and worked on them, snipping with thinning shears, then combing and combing, then the thinning shears again. I always hate to just cut them out, leaving bald ears! Through all this she was a very good girl and I know some of it had to hurt even though I went very gently. I promised her it would never be this bad again because she would have wonderful care from now on!
Congratulations on your up coming adoption of Little Debbie and Thank You so very much for loving her.

Oh! The poor baby! She must be a real trooper to be so patient through all of that! Duncan is not even matted or tangled and he hates his brushing. Ron (Sparky's Dad) is going to loan me his "Furminator" this weekend to see if that helps Duncan's brushing at all. With as patient as Debbie sounds, I don't think we'll ever have an issue keeping her primped and pretty from now on! Thanks Barbra!

Aww, poor Debbie! She sure looks like an angel though, and is such a lucky girl to have found such a wonderful home- it sure sounds like she will be a great dog in no time. I bet her personality will even help Duncan have more confidence too.

Hi Tatha,
I am the individual who took your new Little Debbie from the breeding facility in March. It sounds as though the "baby steps" that we took for awhile are no longer needed, thanks to the love & care of Barbra & now you!
With tears of thankfulness, in my eyes, I want to tell you how very happy I am that the two of you found each other. Bless you for loving her & giving her such a wonderful life!
THANK YOU!
D'Ann
