Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Duncan Goes to Scotland

Duncan is home now from his road trip. We drove up to Michigan for my cousin's wedding this weekend and he came with us. He had a little trouble getting used to jumping up into my Mom's big SUV, but eventually got the hang of it. He never made a sound when we were on the road. He slept most of the way on and off actually. Every once-in-awhile he would get up, turn around in his seat and lay back down. It's about a fifteen hour trip, and Duncan was amazing. We stayed at my Dad's house and Duncan seemed just as comfortable there as he would have at home. He spent most of his time on my bed, but did curl up with me on the couch one night while we watched a movie. The town we traveled to is Alma, Michigan; the town where I was born actually. Alma is known as "Scotland, USA"; obviously a great deal of Scottish influence in the original settlement. I'll be loading a picture shortly of Duncan in front of the city sign. We got back to Kansas City on Monday night. I dropped Duncan at home and went to pick up Debbie. Thanks again so much to Ron and Sparky for watching her for me. Sparky evidently fell in love with Debbie.

When I got Debbie home Duncan gave me a great big scare. As I was trying to get Debbie into the house (she's still a little hesitant about going through the front door) Duncan bolted and started trotting down the street in the direction we usually go for our walks. Not to worry. He's home safe now and fine. But boy he scared me to death. I always thought if he got away from me I would never catch him. Debbie and I (still on her leash) took off after him walking briskly-not running so we wouldn't scare Duncan and make him go faster. He wasn't running from me though. He just trotted calmly down the street, looking back at me over his shoulder occasionally. He wasn't running away. It was like he was saying, "Mom, we've been in the car all day long, and I want to go for my walk. So I'm going, whether you like it or not." He got about two blocks down the street before someone came out the front door of their house. He couldn't deal with that and turned right around and walked back to me. I was his confidence I guess. He came right to me and I bent over and switched Debbie's leash to him and picked her up and headed home-completely out of breath from the adrenaline pumping through me. I couldn't believe it. Got to be more careful! So, once I calmed down I went ahead and put them both on their own leashes and took them to the park for a walk. Duncan needed it I guess.

Glad you had a nice trip to my (and your)home state! I'm closer to Detroit, but glad you came for a visit, anyways.
Dogs sure are funny about taking themselves for a walk- all of mine have tried it at one time or another, so now I make sure I teach them to come to me immediately when called, especially if I sound angry with them (treats and praise always follow, even with a stern "Come!") that way in an emergency they know the right thing to do.
