Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Obedience

Duncan is doing so well! I guess I could start almost every post with that statement. We continue to work on new commands. He is gaining more confidence with his "sit." He normally backs up a couple steps before sitting, probably to give himself a little distance from me so that if he decides I'm going to hurt him he has more time to jump back up to where he can move again. But he's not backing up as much as he has been. And he definitely, definitely knows what sit means. He is also beginning to understand what "lay down" means. We worked on both for awhile last night as well as "shake." Shake is going to be a little more difficult for him because he's so sensitive about his paws. I'm not sure if he lived on wire in the puppy mill like Debbie did, but he is definitely protective of his little feet. He has yet to willingly give me his paw when I ask him to shake, but he is getting better about not pulling his paw away from me when I take it. We'll keep working on that as it will help in his grooming as well.

Our Little Debbie comes home to us tomorrow afternoon and we are very excited! We are also very excited about the reunion picnic for LL Dog Rescue on Saturday! Duncan really enjoys meeting other dogs at the park, so a whole picnic full of people with their adopted dogs is just going to thrill him! We're going to have so much fun! I'll be sure to take my camera and get lots of pictures!
