Welcome to Winning Duncan Over! You will find in these pages the story of a Shetland Sheep dog who spent 8 years as a puppy mill stud dog before being rescued. Duncan's rescue is only the beginning of the story however. A great deal of time, work, love and patience is needed to turn an abused puppy mill dog into a happy and healthy pet, and that is the story told here. If you would like to read Duncan's full story I recommend that you start in the Archives at the left with February 2007 - when it all began for me, Duncan's guardian. Thank you for visiting Duncan's site, and please tell a friend!

Duncan of Sunnybrook Farm

Duncan had a very big day yesterday. We went up to our Pastor's farm north of Smithville for a Priesthood meeting and picnic. There were about 50 people there and Duncan did EXTREMELY well! I was so proud of him! He was of course a little nervous at first, but became comfortable fairly quickly. He walked around with me and visited different people letting them pet him and he even exhibited his curiosity and walked around on his retractable leash saying hi to different people while I sat on the ground and ate my dinner! This is a picture of part of the group that Duncan was socializing with.

The last time we were at the farm, Duncan met Dash the miniature horse. He was very interested in Dash and wanted to walk right up to him and sniff and say hi. I think he thought Dash was just another big dog! They also have some goats, horses, and cows as well, and Duncan seemed perfectly comfortable around the animals. This goat was herded up onto this trailer by our Pastor's Border Collie puppy Buster. In this pic he is keeping an eye on Duncan to make sure he is not coming after him.

Here are some additional pictures of him hanging out with his friends Bud and Nancy. I just could not believe how well he did with such a large group of people. He was certainly cautious, but that is normal for most Shelties. Everyone there was excited to see Duncan too because I had talked about him in my sermon the week before. They couldn't believe that this was the same dog that I had described as I had first met him in all his quivering fright. Mark one up for Duncan Hines! By the time we got in the car to head for home, Duncan was one sleepy boy!

Dear Tatha,

I so enjoy reading your posts! I found your website a month or so ago through sheltie nation.

My shy sheltie is 3 years olds (just!). I've ordered McConnell's The Cautious Canine (another trainer had alerted me to her books, which I found to be wonderful). I'd love to get another sheltie, but I think I might have to wait a couple of years. Anyways, I just started Sheba with agility training and she did so well the first time! I think it was because she was in the rink by herself with just me and the trainer, who also happens to own shelties. There were only 2 other people there with their dogs that evening, so she wasn't "pressured" by having to look at anyone behind her. Anyways, if you could peek with me at her home life, you'd never guess she was so shy, but she sure is with other people. I don't think I could take her to an event as you did with Duncan.

I look forward to more of your posts!

Lizziecat (also owning 2 cats!)
